Why Rejuvenation Medicine?

Many times I get asked “what is rejuvenation medicine?” or “how did you get started in that?” The first question I will answer in a minute, but the second question can be answered simply – by necessity!
My name is Dr. Bartley Harvard Kerr and I run National Rejuvenation Centers in Palm Harbor. I have had a lifelong fascination with nutrition, hormone balance, genetics and exercise. I have treated thousands of people with conservative regimens, but realize many people, especially those over the age of 35, are not “playing chess with all the pieces” or more specifically, their hormone levels are low or out of synch. People gain weight, lose muscle, their libido, etc., and this can further manifest to more serious developments as sickness and eventually death. You have to love the aging process!
At National Rejuvenation Centers, we focus on getting our patient’s hormone levels back to where they were when they were the healthiest – when they were in their twenties. But we don’t stop there as every patient is an individual and all aspects of their life need to be addressed such as sleep, nutrition, exercise, stress, etc. We focus on rejuvenating our patients in all these categories to help them look better, feel better and be healthier! We also strongly believe that these types of treatments should be affordable to everyone, not just the elite.
I previously said that I got into rejuvenation medicine out of necessity. That necessity was a grumpy old guy who was pushing 80 – my father. As life rapidly moves around you, you sometimes are oblivious to the obvious. My dad had two mini strokes and became more and more withdrawn. His passion of golf no longer interested him, eating no longer interested him and he would go to sleep every day at 4:30. Hid did nothing with his friends anymore and his day consisted of waking up, watching cable news, then going to sleep. My mom came to my office and told me with a worried look that my father was “not right” and she believed he was dying. It hit me like a ton of bricks as even though you see this little old guy in front of you, you still think of him as “DAD”. But my mom was right. My father was not well. This was the impetus I needed to apply the tenants of what I have been studying for the majority of my life – hormonal balance.
Back to my dad. After a comprehensive blood analysis and examination, we had a plan for my father to feel better, and enjoy his later years. Usually patients start getting the real benefit out of treatment in about 5-6 weeks. True to that doctrine, I came home from work one evening after my dad has been a patient for this amount of time. I passed this kid who lives down the street from me throwing a football with his father. At second glance, it was not his father, it was my father! I was shocked – this is a guy who is usually in bed at this hour and hasn’t done anything like this in a long time. In addition, he was throwing perfect spirals consistently 30 yards! I asked him “What are you doing?!” a little nervous that he was going to hurt himself. He told me “for the first time in years, I woke up feeling good, without the usual aches and pains and a lot of energy. That 5-6 week mark was the beginning of my father’s “rebirth” so to speak.
Today my dad has put on over ten pounds of muscle, lost three inches on his waist and many of his wrinkles went away. He really looks about 15 years younger than he is. He lives an active life as he rides his bike to the gym, is lifting weights with poundages that many guys half his age would have trouble with. My father is having the time of his life! He goes on numerous trips and has a blast with his friends going to restaurants and joking around. He is no longer grumpy, and my mom says he is actually “nice” and he has a renewed interest in her (from a physicians standpoint I have to hear about it, from a son’s standpoint I try to erase the thought as quickly as possible!) The best part of this is in the numbers. My father’s blood work has never been pristine. I think he has had high cholesterol as long as I have been alive – until now! His blood profiles were amazing after six moths. They look like an athletic 26 year old! His primary care physician, a wonderful guy, was startled with the blood work and his overall health (I think my father used the word “amazed”).
That is how we started National Rejuvenation Centers, and since then, I have had so many patient stories like my fathers. I am routinely amazed at what I see and love the fact that rejuvenation medicine has had such profound effect on so many people. The comment that keeps on coming back to me is a positive “life changing.”
In the next few weeks, I will go over some other interesting patient stories, from 50 year old ex-athletes, the 40 year old woman who lost 2 inches off her waist in ten days, and the woman who, if she allows me to post her picture, you would not be able to guess her age!
If you want to look better, feel better, and be healthier, give us a call and set up an appointment today!
