Male menopause, commonly referred to as andropause, can cause depression. This is primarily due to a deficiency in the hormone testosterone. Just as adequate levels of testosterone cause a sense of well being, deficiencies can cause the opposite, often leading to depression. It has been reported that men with low levels of testosterone are 400% more likely to be diagnosed with depression versus men with adequate testosterone levels! Many current studies at major universities are focussing on testosterone’s mood elevating and anti-depressant effects.
